프랑스 국왕의 순례 : 성왕 루이 9세의 순례 행적
성왕 루이의 시대는 탁발수도회의 번성기이기도 했다. 루이는 탁발수도사들 의 “아버지요 은인”이었을 뿐만 아니라 이들의 이상과 삶을 본받고자 노력했다. 설교와 속죄, 겸양과 자선 등 내면의 영성과 실천에 대한 그의 열정은 새로운 신앙의 정신에 감화한 속인 성인의 성덕이었다. 기욤 드 생파튀스(Guillaume de Saint-Pathus) 같은 궁정의 고해신부들이 그려낸 수도사-왕 루이의 이미지 는 수도사 같은 그의 처신을 비난한 당시의 목소리들로 보건대 완전히 허구는 아니었다. 고해, 성체성사와 더불어 순례라는 대중적인 종교 관행이 발달한 이 시기에 이 수도사-왕은 또한 헌신적인 순례자-왕의 모습으로 나타났다. 특히 1244년 5월 로카마두르 순례는 지극히 사적이고 종교적인 행위인 순례가 다소 간 정치의 연장이고 현실이었음을 잘 보여준다. 자크 르고프의 지적처럼 종교적 목적에 도달하려는 노력과 왕권을 강화하려는 행동은 불가분하게 얽혀 있었다. 마찬가지로 사후에 종교적 숭배의 대상이 된 성 루이는 또한 프랑스 왕조의 정 치적 후광이 되었다.
The Pilgrimage of a French King : The Pilgrimage of Saint Louis
The era of Saint Louis witnessed the height of prosperity of the Mendicant Orders. Louis was not only the “father and benefactor” of the friars, but also tried to emulate their ideals and lives. His inner spirituality and passion for religious practices, such as listening to sermons, penitence, humility and charity, were the virtues of a lay saint inspired by the new devotion. The image of Louis as a friar-king, portrayed by royal confessors such as Guillaume de Saint-Pathus, was not entirely fictitious in the light of contemporary voices criticizing his friarly conduct. During the period when the popular religious practices of pilgrimage, along with confession and Eucharist, unfolded, the friar-king also appeared as a devoted pilgrim-king. In particular, the pilgrimage to Rocamadour in May 1244 clearly indicated that the pilgrimage, an extremely private and religious act, was extended to a reality of politics, to a certain extent. As Jacques Le Goff points out, efforts to reach religious goals and actions to strengthen royal authority were inextricably intertwined. Similarly, as an object of religious worship posthumously, Saint Louis also became a valuable political halo of the French dynasty.
